How the calendars are made

Real frost dates

US cities use NOAA’s 1991–2020 freeze statistics for the nearest weather station; Canadian cities use Environment Canada’s. Elsewhere we estimate them from 30-year temperature records, checked against 88 stations (typically within a week).

Crop rules

Each crop has plain rules: how much frost it takes, how warm the soil must be, how long it takes, and how much heat makes it bolt or drop its flowers. We test every day of the year against them.

Refreshed daily

The “in the garden now” lists and today markers move every day. Read the full method, including where it can be wrong.
